In the year 1926, the United States of America saw the birth of the Godiva chocolate brand, which was later purchased by the Turkish company Yildiz in the year 2007. More than ten thousand locations on every continent stock chocolates branded with the Godiva name. These chocolates are sold all over the globe.
The significance and the past
Since the very beginning of the company’s existence, the high-end chocolate brand that was named after a noblewoman who lived in the 11th century and was known as Lady Godiva has used a picture of Lady Godiva as part of its visual identity.
The wordmark and the symbol that sits over it make up the Godiva logo, which exudes class and sophistication in equal measure. When applied to the container, the chocolate brown on the white colour palette may take on golden tones, giving the impression that the product is much more refined and expensive than it really is.
The name “Godiva” is rendered in a traditional sans-serif font with acute angles and somewhat thickened ends of the letter lines. This typeface is used for the wordmark that appears in all capital letters. The tagline “Chocolatier” is written in cursive with all of the letters in lowercase, with the exception of the initial “C,” which is capitalised.
1926 – 2005
The first iteration of the Godiva emblem was created in 1926 and remained in use by the renowned company for over rightly years. It was a monochromatic symbol, black and white, with the sophisticated graphic component positioned above the two-tiered inscriptions. The whole of the components were rendered in black, and they were superimposed on a simple white backdrop. The graphic element represented a lady riding a horse, and it was done with a great deal of detail using lines that were very thin and silky. As for the logotype, it was designed to be completed in two lines and had an uppercase “Godiva” that was bold and smooth, written above an italicised “Chocolatier” that was written in title case and featured thin lines connecting the letters.
2005 – Present
A depiction of Lady Godiva astride a horse may be seen on the Godiva symbol. According to the urban legend, Countess rode through town nude on a horse for the purpose of lowering the taxes for her husband, the Earl of Mercia.
The Godiva brand has a long and storied past, which is reflected in its distinctive emblem. Even though it is understated and refined, it is the ideal visual identity for a premium company like this one.
