The automobile logo that Hyundai started using at the beginning of the 1990s is one of the most interesting ones in existence. The logo for the company seems to be a straightforward letter encased inside an oval shape at first glance; however, the inspiration for the design was really a simplified depiction of two individuals clasping hands. The logo, which was designed for the Korean company in 1969, had a monochromatic composition with the “HD” monogram set in a proprietary font and put atop a trapezoid. The upper corners of the trapezoid were rounded, while the bottom ones were sharpened. The right vertical bar of the Hyundai “H” was stretched out and curved to the right at the top portion of the letter, and the line’s terminus was pointed. The picture was shown on a white backdrop, and it had a circular black frame with a very thin border.

1970 – 1978

In 1970, the abstract automobile form that included the inscription “HD” was given some minor adjustments. Both of the components were shrunk, and the circular frame was replaced with an oval that was extended horizontally. In 1990, the present version of the Hyundai symbol would bring this oval shape back into the company’s visual identity.

1978 – 1992

In 1978, Hyundai fully rethought the notion of its visual identity, resulting in the creation of a new logo and the adoption of a colour palette that was bright and vibrant. The first version’s smooth lines were replaced with straight geometry, and the badge was updated to have a rectangular shape that was positioned horizontally and had bright blue text that read “HD” on the left and the name of the firm written in Korean on the right from the monogram. The use of blue and white as the primary colours in the logo helped to make it more appealing and easily recognised, while the use of straight lines conveyed professionalism and dependability.

1990 – Today

The now-iconic Hyundai logo, which debuted in 1990 in its original iteration and is being used by the company today, was first introduced. The corporation made the decision to include aspects of all of the prior designs, and the combination turned out to be successful. The new symbol for the company had the form of an oval for the frame, and within that oval was a bold letter “H” that was slanted. In the year 2003, Hyundai’s smooth and elegant emblem was given a companion in the form of a contemporary and stylish logotype, which was placed to the right of the emblem and was executed in the uppercase of a custom sans-serif typeface with clean lines and half of the angles rounded. This new logotype was introduced in the same year. The only letter in the wordmark to be printed in lowercase but to have the same size as the surrounding capitals is the letter “N,” which can be found in the wordmark.

2011 – 2017

In 2011, Hyundai made the decision to move in a three-dimensional direction and began utilising a three-dimensional silver symbol in place of the two-dimensional blue one. The lines remained untouched, as well as the logotype, which was still placed in the right from the symbol, but due to the use of gradient glossy metallic shade, the whole image looks more airy and fresh. Despite this, the badge was only worn by official personnel for a total of six years.

The Hyundai logo is a futuristic and strong sans-serif typeface that is set in mixed case. This typeface is extremely similar to other typefaces such as Lustra Semi Bold and Bank Sans SemiCond Bold. The angles on one side of the letters have been sharpened, while the angles on the other side have been softened; this has resulted in the creation of a distinctive atmosphere and creates a sensation of motion and speed.
