Square Enix Montréal changed its name and logo to Studio Onoma in mid-October 2022. Just months after Swedish firm Embracer Group purchased Square Enix’s western subsidiary.

Journalists observed the August trademark registration of Onoma. The formal renaming happened just today. The new moniker, translated from Greek as “name,” emphasises the studio’s potential, creativity, and adaptability, according to experts. Names give things and people life. The company’s website interprets “Onoma” this way.

The game developer is ready for the image modification. He formed a design and communications team in May 2022. During the five-month rebranding process, specialists assessed 165 names and picked 15, favouring English and French-pronounceable names. The “Onoma” variation was chosen as the final logo.

Typographers created a flattened wordmark typeface. Customer-friendly rounded edges symbolise the brand. The centre letter “O” is extended horizontally to represent a portal into creativity and limitless possibilities. Like a large button.

Background colour determines logo colour. The symbol may symbolise various Onoma initiatives with this basic colour scheme. Black-and-white inscriptions suit any visual setting. The Bauhaus style—a mix of cubism, constructivism, and geometricism—inspired the simple design.
