Yahoo is one of the e-mail providers that has come a long way in establishing its visual identity in a very short amount of time. Already after the first significant makeover, which was carried out in 2009, the platform discovered its corporate colour palette, which is now used in each and every Yahoo Mail logo.

How does Yahoo! Mail work?

Yahoo! Mail is an online mail platform that was first introduced by Yahoo Inc. in 1997. Since its inception, Yahoo! Mail has grown to become one of the most widely used e-mail systems in the world, boasting more than 220 million subscribers from every corner of the earth. Yahoo! Mail was one of the first services of this sort to become accessible to consumers completely free of charge, making it one of the pioneers in the industry.

1997 – 2002

The very first version of the Yahoo Mail logo was shown to the public in the year 1997. It had a very simple design, consisting of the company name written in two different colours and fonts, and occasionally an extra insignia portraying an envelope or a mailbox. The initial portion of the inscription, “Yahoo!,” was written in leaping capitals of a square serif font and was vivid red in colour. The word “Mail,” on the other hand, was written in a calm and subdued shade of blue using a straightforward and slightly constricted sans-serif typeface.

2002 – 2009

The graphical components were removed from the Yahoo Mail logotype, and the text and colour palette were also updated. In addition, the graphical elements were removed from the Yahoo Mail logotype. While “Mail” went from a brilliant red to a dark grey hue and was set in all caps with a full-shaped contemporary sans-serif, “Yahoo!” received a faint shadow added to it, and its contours were cleaned up and reinforced.

2009 – 2013

The makeover that took place in 2009 included the introduction of a new colour palette, which remained consistent with the brand and is now the primary indicator of Yahoo Mail. Purple, a hue associated with enlightenment and originality, was chosen to take the place of the brilliant blue. There have been a few extra variations made throughout the years, despite the fact that the core logo has stayed the same since it was introduced in 2002 (apart from the primary hue). For instance, Annie had a white envelope in her possession that was lined with solid purple paper and had a white “Y” sticking out of it. Or it may be a symbol for a mobile app that looks like a solid purple square with rounded corners, a geometric white envelope, and the “Yahoo!” logotype in a gradient below it.

2013 – 2019

The Yahoo Mail logo will undergo yet another makeover in 2013, and this time the focus will be more on the overall style and curves, despite the fact that the colour palette will also be updated. The logo as a whole was given a more icy and elegant appearance by the deeper, more blue-toned hue of purple. The primary alteration that was made was to the font used for the “Yahoo!” lettering. This was the first time that the typeface has been modified since the original iteration of the logo. The new typeface has relatively thin and straight lines, some of which have very tiny curves or forks added to them. It gives off the impression of sophistication while also being crisp and modern at the same time.

During the makeover that took place in 2019, both the typography and colour scheme of the Yahoo Mail logo were changed. Today, it is written in extra-bold lowercase letters with a slanted exclamation mark that separates the word “Yahoo” in a darker shade of purple from the word “Mail” which is written in a lighter shade. The mobile app symbol for the Mail service portrays a white envelope with rounded corners. This image is positioned atop a strong white “Yahoo!” Wordmark in lowercase, and the exclamation mark is italics at the end.

Size and hue of the text

The major insignia of Yahoo Mail, which is a strong lowercase inscription, is designed in a big and hefty sans-serif font. The letters in this typeface have contemporary forms, and the lines are broad and cut straight through. Both Supera Gothic Extra Black and Hurme Geometric Sans 3 Black are the fonts that come the closest to replicating the one that is utilised in this symbol.

Regarding the colour scheme used for the visual identity of Yahoo! Mail, it is comprised of two different hues of the colour purple, which is associated with intelligence and imagination, as well as creativity and communication. The first portion of the emblem is executed in a dark and profound hue, which is offset by a lighter and more vibrant shade of purple that is utilised for the letters of “Mail.”
